We understand by monitoring a machine the acquisition, processing and storage of data. According to the objectives to be achieved we must distinguish between: surveillance, protection, diagnosis and prediction.
- Surveillance of machines. Its purpose is to indicate when a problem exists. It must distinguish between good and bad condition, and if it is bad, to indicate how bad it is.
- Protection of machines. Its objective is to avoid catastrophic failures. A machine is protected when the machine stops automatically because the values indicating its condition are considered dangerous.
- Fault diagnosis. Its objective is to define which is the specific problem.
- Life forecast. Its objective is to estimate how much longer the machine could function without the risk of a catastrophic failure.
